EGYPT LAUNCHES HORSE MICROCHIPPING PROJECT AT THE PYRAMIDS

The General Authority for Veterinary Services has launched a microchipping and registration project for horses at the Giza Pyramids.

Ordered by Minister of Agriculture Alaa Farouk, the initiative supports tourism development and prepares Egypt to host the upcoming Longines Global Champions Tour by the Pyramids, to be held from from 22 - 24 October, 2026.

Dr. Hamed El-Aqnass, Chairman of the Authority, noted that the project establishes a unified electronic health record for each horse, aligning with the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) and the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI)standards. Key pillars include:

Surveillance & tracking: routine testing to keep the area disease-free.

Biosecurity: restricting unregistered horse movement for safety.

Electronic health records: centralising vaccinations, testing, and medical history.

Carried out in partnership with local veterinary bodies and Brooke Hospital, the project ensures peak readiness for international equestrian events.
