Horse Times Egypt: Equestrian Magazine :News :POLO HALL OF FAMER MIKE AZZARO JOINS THE 2014 TEAM FOR WINDSOR’S SECOND BIENNIAL CHARITY POLO CUP

Vero Beach, Florida

Mike Azzaro, six-time winner of the US Open (and named MVP in the 2012 games) and recently-elected to the Museum of Polo’s Hall of Fame and the National Museum of Polo, has joined the 2014 team for Windsor’s second Charity Polo Cup, it was announced today by Hilary M. Weston and Salvatore Ferragamo, Honorary Co-Chairs of the biennial event which will take place Saturday, February 15, 2014.

In addition to his six US Open Championships, Azzaro is the only American player to have won the British Open (followed up by a win in the Queens’ Cup). He has also won the USPA Gold Cup twice. Known for holding the longest record for a perfect handicap (10 years), the polo star has played for a number of US Championship winning teams including Gehache, Outback, Isla Carroll, Farm Manor and Retama II. He was also a stalwart member of Galen Weston’s Maple Leafs team in the 1990’s.

Awarded the Polo Excellence Award by Polo Magazine, Azzaro is known for his aggressive forward style of play and has always been a crowd favourite. He joins Salvatore Ferragamo, Memo Gracida and John Walsh for the second biennial Windsor Charity Polo Cup, which will be sponsored by Baltimore headquartered investment firm Brown Advisory.

Proceeds from the 2014 event will directly benefit the Rett Syndrome Research Trust and Indian River County School District: “Summer Literacy on the Lagoon” programme which was designed exclusively for Windsor to help with student literacy goals.

Steve Weagle, Chief Meteorologist for Palm Beach’s WPTV (NBC channel 5) will emcee the 2014 Windsor Charity Polo Cup. The official commemorative poster for the games was created by Melbourne, Florida artist Derek Gores. A limited edition poster will be signed by the artist and winning team, and the original piece will be auctioned off during the event luncheon.

ABOUT WINDSOR:

Windsor (www.windsorflorida.com) is a private residential community spanning 416 acres of lush barrier island between the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean in Vero Beach, Florida. Windsor was designed by renowned town planners Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk following the New Urbanism principles of urban design, one that offers public and community spaces framed by timeless architecture and landscape design that celebrates this tropical and unspoiled setting. Windsor is comprised of 350 homesites in various settings that allow for a variety of home styles including village homes, cottages and country estates remarkable for their signature Anglo-Caribbean architecture and gracious living.

Windsor provides homeowners privacy and seclusion combined with the finest amenities, exemplary services and sporting activities. Members enjoy an 18-hole links-style golf course, Har-Tru tennis courts, an Equestrian Centre with over four miles of riding trails, a fully equipped Fitness Centre, and Gun Club. The Clubhouse, with interiors designed by Yabu Pushelberg is a favourite gathering place much like The Beach Club which features private cabanas, its own restaurant, a pool-side Cabana Bar and 25-metre swimming pool. Windsor is also known for its art gallery featuring a revolving series of world-class exhibitions, and a Town Hall, which serves as a chapel and a venue for weddings, concerts and lectures.
